m390 vs s90v

Best steel can give you miracles on daily knife performance, but getting a quality product is a matter of expense, right?! But, you’re gonna be having the high-quality steel at an affordable budget, trust me! Choosing between m390 and s90v can satisfy your knife needs. By the way, what’s to pick? Here you need to know the key difference between the m390 vs s90v.

The comparison between m390 vs s90v shows that both of them offer excellent edge retention. s90v requires low maintenance and doesn’t require frequent sharpness. Whereas, m390 offers better hardness, toughness, and corrosion resistance at a cheaper rate. However, S90v is more expensive steel than the m390.

It’s better to choose between this premium quality steel with a clear discussion. So, stay tuned for picking the right one!

About m390: An Overview

m390 is a favorite choice for pocket knives as it fulfills every need that users want. It’s mainly manufactured by 3rd generation powder metallurgy and became popular in 2010.

Due to the presence of 20% chromium, m390 provides excellent hardness and corrosion resistance which make it better than others.

Bohler m390 is mostly used in smaller knives. Additionally, it works well with professional, tactical, hunting, and cutlery knives.

About s90v: An Overview

s90v is of premium steel that offers excellent edge retention,  hardness, and durability. The presence of 9% vanadium makes it better durable than others. The sharp edges remain for a longer period and that’s the best thing it delivers.

S90v steel is best for EDC and pocket knives. As it is ideal for slicing, it is primarily a great companion for outdoor activities like camping and hunting. However, it is not appropriate for heavy-duty tasks. This steel also use in plastic woodscrews, valve components, nozzles, slitters, cutters, gear
pumps, pelletizing, etc.

Key differences

Although both m390 and s90v provide equal edge retention and toughness, their chemical composition makes many distinct features between them. So, let’s dive into the details of key differences to get the right one.

1. Hardness

Although they both contain the same amounts of chromium, the vanadium content
determines the difference in hardness.

M390 has better hardness than the s90v. Still, they both have equal percentages of chromium, but the hardness is different. The Rockwell Report said that the hardness of m390 is between 60-62 whereas s90v’s hardness is between 52-57.

2. Toughness

The toughness of the m390 and s90v is almost similar,

Both steels contain 14% chromium, which almost improves their toughness. However, in actuality, the M390 can withstand twisting, blending, and beating more easily.

So, yeah! I think the m390 would be better for toughness than the s90v.

3. Wear and corrosion resistance

There is no discernible difference between the two steels’ corrosion and wear resistance. However, the m390 has slightly better performance and can defeat the s90v. Both m390 and s90v have equal percentages of chromium. The 14% chromium is sufficient to fend off any deterioration or corrosion. But, m390 has a corrosion-resistant element in its alloy composition which is the reason why it is slightly better than s90v.

4. Edge retention

Considering the edge retention of steel, s90v will step ahead in the race because it has excellent edge retention. The presence of high vanadium of 9% makes the s90v superior for holding the edge
longer. Whereas, m30v has 4% vanadium which can’t beat the edge retention of s90v.

5. Ease of sharpening

Ease of sharpness is another factor that makes a big difference among steels. If we talk about the ease of sharpening, then the M390 will win.

Again considering the edge retention of steel, s90v will step ahead in the race because it has excellent edge retention and doesn’t require frequent sharpness!

Due to the presence of high vanadium carbides in s90v, it’s very hard to sharpen. The sharpening technique is also difficult. In contrast, m390 is easier to sharpen due to fewer vanadium carbides. But, it requires frequent sharpening as it has less edge retention.

6. Cost

Both steel is great for its features according to their rate. But, the m390 is better as it offers the best features at a cheaper rate. However, the s90v is more expensive than it offers.
